CSS National Dialog Archives (2008-2010)
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) at North Carolina State University partnered from 2008 through 2010 in a project to initiate a national dialog about Context Sensitive Solutions (CSS). The project was designed to serve as a catalyst for an ongoing exchange of ideas, and to build momentum for wider implementation of CSS in the transportation industry.
The goals of the Dialog were to:
- introduce CSS principles and practices to a wide array of partner organizations
- identify CSS best practices and present those to transportation professionals across the nation
- strengthen and broaden the interest in Context Sensitive Solutions
- discover new opportunities for partnerships
- bring new perspectives to planning, designing, building and maintaining transportation facilities
- foster a community of CSS practice and promote the dissemination of CSS best practice examples
The Dialog featured a series of one-day workshops held in various locations across the United States. Each workshop highlighted CSS best practices, using transportation projects, plans, and programs to initiate discussion and interaction.
The Dialog was sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Office of Human and Natural Environment as part of their CSS Program. The Center for Transportation and the Environment, a university-based transportation center housed at North Carolina State University, conducted the work. The Dialog was funded by the FHWA’s Office of Planning, Environment and Realty’s Surface Transportation Environment and Planning Cooperative Research Program (STEP).
The final report for CSS National Dialog activities from November 2008 through September 2010 documents the collection of case studies, the organization of the regional workshops, provides statistics of workshop participants and their evaluation of the workshops. The report also includes a brief summary of the major topics of discussion and common themes from the workshops.
